  1. Doug, brilliant. I especially like the Hallmark comment. Far too easy to lose the essence of these special days, including of course Xmas, under the weight of commercialism.

    1. Thanks Noel. I’ve wrestled with this stuff for years, and in a way the post was intended to help me see these events in a number of different ways. Most things in life have many perspectives and for many years I checked out of Mother’s Day (Mum died just before I turned 19), before choosing to see a different side once Keira was born. I know these events are in many ways designed to separate us from our money and yet I don’t know many people who don’t appreciate being made a bit of a fuss of, particularly when it is done lovingly.
