Butterflies

I was with a good friend last Friday – talking about work.

My friend David was suggesting that part of the plan for developing my business should be about butterflies. Yes – I gave him a funny look too, just like the one on your face now. And then David showed me this:

Blend into the herd

Here’s a link to the original cartoon – drawn by the very talented Tom Fishburne.

OK – the cartoon is a few years old, but the point is well made. Blending in, it’s all well and good, but – where’s the opportunity in that? To help me develop my thinking, David suggested I paint a butterfly. I tried a few approaches and wanted to share my sketches with you here. I’ve stuck them on my wall as a reminder – be the butterfly 🙂

Owl Sketch

A few people contacted me after the Art of Correspondence post. The towers and the owl postcards I sent home to Carole and Keira went down well. I offered an owl to someone who got in touch and yesterday, I finally got round to sketching it.

I tried out a new brush for this sketch, it’s called a large detailer and I used it to draw the owl. The brush has a fine point and long bristles, yet once I started to play with it, I realised it is much easier to control than it first appeared.

The Art of Correspondence

I’ve been working away from home a lot recently. Often when I go away (on holiday) I offer to paint postcards for people, but on my latest business trip to Riga, I thought it would be fun to send some postcards home to my family instead. We Skyped frequently during the trip and I didn’t tell Carole and Keira that I was preparing and sending these cards. They are a surprise way of keeping in touch, and they also serve as brief glimpses into how I was feeling and what I was up to.
